Charles Gabb and Mark Ruffell prosecute Hampshire drugs gang

Charles Gabb and Mark Ruffell have successfully prosecuted the members of a gang who supplied cocaine across Portsmouth and laundered millions of pounds of cash. The gang leader was jailed for 18 years and 5 months at Winchester Crown Court on Tuesday 5 September, after admitting to conspiring to supply cocaine in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas, and conspiring to transfer criminal property – relating to approximately £3.5million of cash. All of the offences took place between March 2018 and May 2020.

Seven members of the gang were prosecuted by Mark Ruffell and Charles Gabb in the summer of 2022, and their leader was prosecuted by Mark Ruffell, led by Nick Haggan KC, in the summer of 2023.

Charles Gabb has covered every type of serious offence both for the Defence and for the Crown Prosecution Service in the Crown Court and the Court of Appeal. He is also a specialist Jury Advocate. His current workload includes lengthy conspiracy trials which require careful case management and the ability to work with other agencies as a team player.

Mark Ruffell is regularly instructed in heavy weight criminal defence work and is also regularly instructed by the CPS as a grade 4 advocate. He has been instructed as Independent Counsel by the Serious Fraud Office and by HMRC. He is Chancellor of the Diocese of Gloucester and Deputy Chancellor of the Diocese of Winchester. Mark is head of Pump Court Chambers’ Regulatory and Disciplinary Team.
