News 2nd August 2023
Naomi Gyane

Naomi will be officially sworn in by the Right Reverend Saju Muthalaly on 2nd August and will become the youngest Diocesan Chancellor currently serving in the Church of England. Naomi’s appointment is featured in an article on the Diocese of Leicester website here. Naomi will continue to practice as a barrister.

The Diocesan Chancellor acts as the independent Judge of the Diocesan Consistory Court, overseeing legal issues relating to the use of and reordering of church buildings and land, applications for grave reservations, exhumations and other legal matters. In each diocese they work closely with the Diocesan Registry, local archdeacons and the Diocesan Advisory Committee.

Justin Gau, Head of Pump Court’s Ecclesiastical and Religious Law Team, commented: “This splendid appointment consolidates Pump Court Chambers as one of the pre-eminent sets in the field of Ecclesiastical Law. There are now 5 Diocesan Chancellors in Chambers.”

Pump Court Chambers is ranked as a leading set for Ecclesiastical Law in Chambers & Partners 2023, with Justin Gau, Mark Ruffell and Ruth Arlow listed as leading barristers in this area.
