Equestrian Law

Equestrian Law and the issues around the ownership, care, health and wellbeing, sale and purchase and insurance of horses have become more complex in recent years.

At the same time, the number of horses and other equines in the UK has risen to levels not seen since before WWI. The profile of owners has also changed with large syndicates owning racehorses or eventers and a greater number of people involved with horses who have little or no previous experience of equestrianism. Simply put, there are more horses, more owners and more room for dispute.

Given this complexity and evolving legal landscape, it is important when approaching legal issues relating to horses to take advice from lawyers who understand not just the technical aspects of the law but also the nature and tone of equestrian matters – who understand horses and horse people.

Within our team are lawyers who have deep experience of working with owners, competitors, vets and other equine professionals and who themselves have ridden to a high standard. Julie Mackenzie is the author of Horse Law, the definitive guide to equestrian law. Above all we understand the emotion, time and money invested in horses, whether they are much-loved friends or part of a commercial enterprise.
