Stephanie Painter is developing a mixed common law practice, accepting instructions across a range of criminal, civil and family matters, with a focus on crime. Stephanie is currently undertaking a six-month secondment with the CPS Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit and is due to accept new instructions again in the new year.

Stephanie read Law at the University of Exeter and went on to study a Masters in International Human Rights Law. She holds the Mary McMurray scholarship from Lincoln’s Inn.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Stephanie worked as a Project Manager for a global e-disclosure company. Stephanie managed numerous international projects with magic-circle law firms and advised clients on the e-discovery process from start to finish. Stephanie has also previously worked as a Legal Assistant for a regional solicitors firm, so has a working knowledge of case management.

Legal Services

Stephanie is a qualified Grade 1 CPS Panel Advocate and has successfully prosecuted appeals in the Crown Court. She is regularly instructed to represent clients charged with driving offences, with a focus on presenting exceptional hardship arguments. She also represents the Probation Service and defendants at their PTPH and sentencing hearings.

During pupillage Stephanie spent 3 months under the supervision of Richard Tutt, who has a busy criminal practice. Stephanie gained exposure to health and safety matters and also spent two weeks at the Nursing and Midwifery Council, so she is eager to build her experience of regulatory work.

Stephanie has a keen interest in Courts-Martial work. Prior to joining Chambers, Stephanie was an Officer Cadet in Bristol University Air Squadron for three years, having spent time with the Army and RAF legal services in Germany.

Stephanie has a strong interest in animal welfare, being a member of ALaw (UK Centre for Animal Law) and is well placed to undertake issues relating to the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the other key areas of animal welfare legislation. Stephanie has experience in assisting senior members of Chamber’s Employment Team. She has drafted responses to claimant’s claims in Employment Tribunal cases, prepared Lists of Issues and Scott Schedules and has been instructed to represent a Respondent at a 5 day final hearing.

Stephanie has experience of RTAs and Personal Injury claims. She regularly appears in the County Court acting on small claims trials and MOJ Stage 3. Stephanie has successfully argued both for and against, relief from sanction applications. She is regulary instructed to advise on merits and quantum in personal injury matters.

Stephanie has experience in advising and representing clients in children law proceedings at various stages including final hearings.

During Pupillage, Stephanie spent 3 months under the supervision of Jennifer Lee and gained exposure to matrimonial finance matters. She has experience in drafting financial schedules and also has a keen interest in Court of Protection work.
