Stephanie Painter has a mixed common law practice, accepting instructions across a range of criminal, regulatory and public law matters, with a focus on crime.
Regularly instructed to defend and prosecute in the Crown Court, Stephanie’s practice encompasses a range of offences including serious violence, sexual assault and drugs.
Stephanie is a qualified Grade 3 CPS Panel Advocate and prosecutes and defends Magistrates and Crown Court trials.
Having completed a six-month secondment with the CPS Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, she has gained considerable experience and insight into cases of this nature and has since defended and prosecuted rape and serious sexual offences. Stephanie is on the CPS RASSO Panel.
Stephanie previously assisted on the Covid-19 Inquiry as Junior Counsel, having supported the Undercover Policing Inquiry and the Horizon Post Office Inquiry.
Stephanie is currently working on the Afghanistan Inquiry, instructed by the Ministry of Defence as Counsel for the Witness Legal Team.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Stephanie worked as a Project Manager for a global e-disclosure company. Stephanie managed numerous international projects with magic-circle law firms and advised clients on the e-discovery process from start to finish. Stephanie has also previously worked as a Legal Assistant for a regional solicitors firm, so has a working knowledge of case management.

Stephanie is Direct Access qualified and is regularly instructed to represent clients charged with driving offences. She also represents Defendants and the Probation Service at PTPH and sentencing hearings.
Stephanie has a strong interest in animal welfare, being a member of ALaw (UK Centre for Animal Law). She is well placed to assist with issues relating to the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the other key areas of animal welfare legislation arise. Stephanie is a regular contributor to Chambers’ Crime Team newsletter and recently authored an article on Lucy’s Law; legislation brought in to stop the commercial third-party sale of puppies and kittens, under six months old, by anyone other than a registered breeder.
During pupillage Stephanie spent three months under the supervision of Richard Tutt, who has a busy criminal practice. Stephanie gained exposure to health and safety matters and also spent two weeks at the Nursing and Midwifery Council, so she is eager to build her experience of regulatory work.
Instructed as Disclosure Junior and covered as Junior Counsel led by Sarah Jones KC, as part of the prosecution team in a 12-week multi-handed murder trial.
Instructed as Junior Counsel led by Andrew Houston, prosecuting a high-value, complex domestic Burglary involving significant ANPR and cell-site data.
Instructed to defend a youth accused of sexually assaulting a nine-year old child. Utilised vulnerable witness training and sensitive cross-examination.
Instructed as Junior Counsel to assist with complex disclosure issues, Stephanie was led by John Dyer in this seven-week trial at Isleworth Crown Court.
Stephanie represented the Defendant charged with six counts of Burglary and Perverting the Court of Justice in a five-day trial at Guildford Crown Court.
Instructed to represent the Defendant charged with Possession with Intent to Supply Class A and Possession of an Offensive Weapon. Stephanie referred this case to the National Referral Mechanism and obtained a positive decision that the Defendant is a victim of modern slavery.
Stephanie is acting as Junior Counsel for the Covid-19 Inquiry. She is currently engaged in Module 2A, focusing on the Scottish Government’s decision making during the pandemic.
Stephanie previously spent two years with the Undercover Policing Inquiry, progressing from Junior Junior Counsel to Second Junior Counsel. She gained experience of investigating sensitive material and an insight into how to engage with Core Participants.
Stephanie is broadening her experience of Inquiry work and is keen to take on further work for Core Participants in this area.
Stephanie has a keen interest in Courts-Martial work. Prior to joining Chambers, Stephanie was an Officer Cadet in Bristol University Air Squadron for three years, having spent time with the Army and RAF legal services in Germany.
Stephanie has represented serving military personnel at the Bulford Court Martial Centre.
Stephanie was instructed to defend a Cpl in the Army against three sexual assault allegations. After a three-day trial, the Defendant was found Not Guilty of two out of the three charges.
Stephanie has experience in representing Claimants and Respondents in Employment Tribunal cases. She has been instructed to represent clients in relation to unfair dismissal, wrongful dismissal and age discrimination claims.
Stephanie has previously represented a Claimant in a three-day final hearing, claiming discrimination and constructive, unfair dismissal. She has also represented a Respondent in a two-day final hearing, where she successfully defended the Respondent’s redundancy process.
