Simon Purkis is an expert advocate in civil and family litigation. He has particular interest in family finance disputes and matters involving commercial disputes, contracts and personal injury law. His early experience prosecuting and defending criminal trials provided invaluable experience and served to form the foundations of his advocacy style.

Simon’s clients appreciate his thorough preparation and affable manner. He remarks, “Getting the right advice at an early stage is paramount. It saves time and money which my clients may have but rarely want to waste!”

Having read Classics and graduated from Cambridge University in 2005, Simon excelled at the College of Law where he gained the top marks in two of his final exams for the Bar and was awarded an Exhibition from Inner Temple. He was also a National Finalist in The Times/Herbert Smith Advocacy Competition. He went on to accept a position in the legal department of a Fortune 500 Company working on a project to implement processes necessary to comply with the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive. This was followed by employment as a legal costs advocate. These roles have given him valuable exposure to commercial realities.

Legal Services

Simon provides advice and represents his clients in all aspects of family law including the financial aspects of divorce, and both private and public law children matters. His financial work includes cases with a wide range of assets including business entities and trusts. He regularly deals with residence, contact and care proceedings concerning children and issues of serious domestic violence.

Simon advises and represents a wide range of businesses on general contractual law matters including disputes concerning the Sale of Goods Act, Supply of Goods and Services Act and Unfair Contract Terms Act. He has also been instructed on emergency injunction applications.

Simon advises and provides drafting in non-contentious commercial matters. He recently drafted an online sale of goods and services agreement which incorporated relevant International Commercial Terms. He also advised a specialist legal costs company on the impact of the Jackson reforms and, in light of this, the strategic direction their company may take going forward.

Simon’s expertise in personal injury litigation has an emphasis on injury and damages arising out of road traffic accidents which often include issues of enforceability regarding Credit Hire agreements. He appears on behalf of both claimants and defendants and regularly appears in cases where allegations of fraud have been pleaded associated with exaggerated injury and fraudulent damage.

Simon has been involved in lengthy and high-profile litigation on behalf of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He has also been instructed by Treasury Solicitors to draft witness statements and supporting documentation in negligence and clinical negligence claims brought against the Ministry of Defence.
