In his spare time, Sam enjoys all manner of sports. He has competed internationally in hockey, and recently represented the Bar of England & Wales Cricket Club at the Lawyer’s World Cup in Brisbane. He is a keen runner, cyclist and tennis player.

Samuel Burrett has a busy common law practice, accepting instructions across a range of family, civil, employment and criminal matters.  He is quickly developing a reputation for his detailed case preparation, committed approach and effective advocacy.

Sam is public access qualified. He undertakes such work in all areas of his practice.

Sam read Ancient History at the University of Exeter. He went on to complete the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Bar Professional Training Course at the University of Law. He holds the Buchanan Prize and Levitt Scholarship from Lincoln’s Inn.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Sam was employed as a caseworker at the Bar Pro Bono Unit, where he assisted litigants, who were unable to privately fund their representation and were ineligible for a legal aid, across a breadth of family, civil, employment and criminal matters.

Legal Services

Sam accepts instructions in all areas of family law. He has a particular interest in financial remedy and private children matters.

Sam has experience of all stages of financial remedy proceedings. He has represented in cases involving issues relating to overseas properties, non-disclosure, add-back, freezing injunctions, Imerman documents and non-matrimonial property. He has acted in variation and enforcement matters. He also accepts instructions in contested divorce mattes.

Sam is regularly instructed in private children matters. These often involve an international element. He has acted in cases involving issues of intractable opposition, implacable hostility and/or parental alienation. Sam’s criminal law experience means he is particularly adept in cases involving allegations of serious domestic emotional and/or physical abuse.

Sam frequently appears in the county courts in personal injury claims, contractual disputes and credit hire cases. He has extensive experience of claims arising out of road traffic accidents, often involving low velocity impact, fundamental dishonesty and/or fraud issues. He has dealt with numerous occupiers’ liability claims. He will advise on liability and quantum and draft pleadings.

Sam gained significant exposure to employment law under the supervision of Heather Platt during pupillage. He has developed a keen interest in this area. He has been instructed in discrimination, unfair dismissal, breach of contract, and deduction of wages matters. He has acted pro bono on an EAT appeal on behalf of the Employment Lawyers Association and the Bar Pro Bono Unit.

Sam appears in the Magistrates’, Youth and Crown Courts. His practice encompasses all areas of criminal defence and prosecution work; including drugs, dishonesty, public disorder, sexual and violent offences. Sam also represents private clients charged with driving offences. He has extradition experience and is also keen to develop his regulatory and professional disciplinary practice.
