Ricky has a varied common law practice with experience across numerous practice areas. He is particularly experienced in property disputes and personal injury claims. However, he also has experience of other areas of work including construction, commercial disputes and insolvency.

Ricky is currently instructed as junior counsel to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry on a full-time basis and has been for over two years. He has broad experience of inquiry work and has been involved both in the early and late stages of public inquiries.

Ricky is authorised to accept instructions directly from businesses and members of the public (i.e. on a ‘direct access’ basis) and has accepted such instructions across a broad range of matters within his expertise.

Legal Services

Ricky has been instructed by Grenfell Tower Inquiry on a full-time basis since June 2019. He has worked across two separate teams and has been intimately involved in the preparation for cross-examination of the witnesses as well as drafting legal notes and other documents to assist the Inquiry.

Prior to practicing at the Bar, Ricky also worked on the Undercover Policing Inquiry.

Ricky has significant experience of advising and representing both claimants and defendants in disputes relating to property. He has appeared in the property tribunal as well as in the county court.

His experience encompasses more general matters such as possession and forfeiture proceedings, as well as more niche areas such as claims for collective enfranchisement and claims for contractual costs arising under long lease agreements.

Ricky has also been instructed to advise, draft documents and appear in court in respect of ‘TOLATA’ disputes arising between family members and former cohabitees.

Selected Cases

Z v S

At request of the claimant in possession proceedings, Ricky was consulted in respect of all aspects of the preparation for trial and redrafting defective notices. He was instructed to draft a reply and defence to a counterclaim in which the defendant had sought to rely on promissory estoppel. The matter settled before trial.

A Housing Association v P

Ricky successfully defended a section 21 notice seeking possession of a local authority property by raising a valid and arguable public law defence with multiple limbs.

Ricky has a varied experience of cases which have involved fraud allegations and convictions, including: criminal cases in which the defendant has been charged with making a false statement in order to obtain insurance, contrary to s.174 of the Road Traffic Act 1988; regulatory proceedings against nurses and midwives who are alleged to have been dishonest or have been convicted of the same; and civil cases involving exaggerated claims and findings of fundamental dishonesty in road traffic accidents.

Selected Cases

P v J and Others

A complicated, multi-party High Court case involving franchising and three separate economic torts. Ricky considered a significant number of documents and produced a detailed written advice for the first defendant on the merits of the claim against him and the likely measure of damages.
