Ricky Powell has broad common law experience across numerous practice areas. He is particularly experienced in property disputes and personal injury claims. However, he also has experience of other areas of work including clinical negligence, economic torts, commercial disputes and employment.
Ricky has also regularly defended criminal matters and has particular experience of driving offences.
Ricky is an approachable barrister with excellent interpersonal skills. He has a natural ability to quickly build relationships of trust with all manner of people. He is thorough in his case preparation and is confident in presenting more technical and novel arguments. He makes his submissions with conviction and always conveys a sincere interest in the outcome of his client’s case.
A complicated, multi-party High Court case involving franchising and three separate economic torts. Ricky considered a significant number of documents and produced a detailed written advice for the first defendant on the merits of the claim against him and the likely measure of damages.
At request of the claimant in possession proceedings, Ricky was consulted in respect of all aspects of the preparation for trial and redrafting defective notices. He was instructed to draft a reply and defence to a counterclaim in which the defendant had sought to rely on promissory estoppel. The matter settled before trial.
Ricky successfully defended a section 21 notice seeking possession of a local authority property by raising a valid and arguable public law defence with multiple limbs.
Ricky has a varied experience of cases which have involved fraud allegations and convictions, including: criminal cases in which the defendant has been charged with making a false statement in order to obtain insurance, contrary to s.174 of the Road Traffic Act 1988; regulatory proceedings against nurses and midwives who are alleged to have been dishonest or have been convicted of the same; and civil cases involving exaggerated claims and findings of fundamental dishonesty in road traffic accidents.
