Rachel Troup is an accomplished criminal barrister with significant expertise in defending across the full spectrum of serious offences. A sought-after trial advocate, Rachel has successfully defended in cases of murder (as a led junior), large-scale fraud, organised crime, drug supply, firearms, and serious violence.

Rachel works particularly closely with her solicitor and lay clients, naturally putting anxious clients at ease with her friendly and sensitive manner. Her clients describe her as “utterly determined”, “incredibly hard-working” and as “both compassionate and sharp – a barrister who really listens and whose focus on achieving the right result is second to none”.

Rachel spent 18 months as counsel in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department of a leading UK commercial firm, where she handled a range of complex commercial disputes. She also led the firm’s Criminal and Regulatory Team, advising both external corporate clients and teams across the firm on all aspects of the growing areas in which regulatory regimes attract criminal sanctions.

Rachel is therefore ideally placed to act not only in purely criminal matters but in all matters falling at the juncture of crime and regulation. Believing that early intervention is key to preventing prosecution, Rachel is adept at assisting clients in regulatory matters, providing sound strategic preparatory advice and steady reassurance throughout every stage of the investigation and prosecution process. Her specialist experience, versatility and approachable style have meant that Rachel is also called upon to act for clients during PACE interviews conducted by regulatory authorities.

Rachel defends at Courts Martial and has significant experience of appearing before other specialist tribunals – she accepts instructions to act at Inquests, before Inquiries and on appeal in Criminal Injuries Compensation matters.

Rachel is currently instructed to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
