Lucy Plumpton enjoys a busy practice across the spectrum of Chambers’ work, with particular expertise in civil law.

Prior to joining Chambers, Lucy worked in the pharmaceutical industry for three years, before converting to law. She then spent a year working in the legal and human rights sectors of the Philippines. During this time she drafted communications for submission to United Nations Treaty Bodies (CEDAW and HRC), and assisted with a national prosecution stemming from the largest ever single-attack on journalists – the 2009 massacre of 58 members of the press in Maguindanao province in the Philippines.

She holds an LLM in Human Rights (Distinction) from the University of Nottingham and completed the BPTC (Very Competent) at Kaplan Law School, assisted by a Middle Temple Scholarship.

Prior to pupillage she worked for a senior civil barrister for a year, gaining experience in personal injury, costs, landlord and tenant, insurance and commercial law. She researched and helped update the existing content, as well as drafting a new chapter on the Court of Protection, for the practitioner text Expert Evidence: Law and Practice (4th edition).

Lucy won Middle Temple’s Rosamund Smith Mooting Competition in 2013 as presided over by Lord Judge. She also won the Ede and Ravenscroft Prize for the best mooter in the final.

Legal Services

Lucy Plumpton has developed a specialism in personal injury over several years of predominantly court-based practice. Lucy combines focused analysis and advocacy with excellent client management skills to deliver a first rate service. Lucy brings years of trial experience honed in the Magistrates’, County, and Crown Courts from her broad mixed common law background.

Representing both Claimants and Defendants, Lucy is particularly adept at dealing with cases involving:

– Road traffic accidents (including fundamental dishonesty, fraud, staged/induced accidents, credit hire)

– Claims against public authorities;

– Health and safety; and

– Defective premises.

Lucy frequently advises and acts in matters involving complex liability, quantum and costs issues.

She provides a comprehensive service and is known for returning paperwork by, or in advance of, agreed deadlines.

Lucy is very happy to advise prior to litigation and at the earlier stages on merits, strategy and costs considerations, among others.

Lucy’s commercial practice encompasses (but is not limited to) insolvency, sales of goods, supply of services, consumer contracts, misrepresentation, construction and enforceability of contracts.

Lucy advises and represents parties in contentious and non-contentious probate disputes, including claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. She spent six months working inhouse with the Private Client Team at Penningtons Manches LLP, and so has an excellent understanding of all forms and stages of dispute resolution and litigation in this area.

Lucy has further experience of dealing with issues of testamentary capacity, undue influence, removal/replacement of personal representatives and costs.

She is able to offer a thorough and pragmatic approach, robust advocacy as well as effective and sensitive assistance to clients involved in these proceedings.

.

Lucy is keen to develop her practice in the Court of Protection. She is well placed to do so on account of her previous practice in family law – working with vulnerable clients in children proceedings as well as complex financial matters in matrimonial finance. She has a strong background in psychology, mental capacity and human rights. Lucy welcomes cases which overlap with inheritance, wills and probate matters. Lucy is a regular speaker at Chambers’ seminars on the Court of Protection.

Lucy brings a wealth of experience from prosecuting and defending a wide range of dishonesty offences in the Crown and Magistrates’ Courts; dealing with allegedly fraudulent cases in her personal injury practice; and her longstanding role on the Disclosure Panel for the Serious Fraud Office. Lucy provides an excellent service to her clients, be it as a court advocate or in her drafting/advisory capacity.
