Edward Armitage

Edward is a hardworking, caring, versatile, and effective advocate, and can be instructed in all areas of criminal and regulatory law. After the successful completion of pupillage in 2025, Edward has quickly established a flourishing and busy practice, whereby he has undertaken work across the country including south eastern and western circuits, and courts further afield including court martial sitting in Catterick and Bulford.

Edward is known for his excellent client care and for establishing a strong and personable rapport with vulnerable individuals and/or youths. He works tirelessly and fearlessly at every opportunity to achieve the best outcome for his clients. Edward has been commended for his clinical cross examination and powerful closing speeches before a jury and for his articulate, thorough, and well drafted written submissions which have resulted in cases being discontinued at an early stage due to Edward’s diligent work. He is equally comfortable defending and prosecuting and can be instructed independently as sole junior counsel or being led in complex criminal offences.

Most recently, Edward has completed regulatory training for disciplinary and regulatory proceedings, with an emphasis on the fitness to practise of healthcare professionals, and is well versed in representing clients in interim order applications and substantive hearings. Edward has dealt with a number of issues including opposing the admission of hearsay evidence in sexual misconduct cases and determining the jurisdiction of Panels in preliminary meetings. His attention to detail and wealth of criminal experience greatly supports his growing practice in regulatory law where there is significant legal cross over. Edward can be instructed as both a case presenter and/or for the registrant.

In addition to publicly funded work, Edward has been instructed privately in a range of criminal matters including motoring and driving-related offences. He has recently completed his Direct Access training, and will soon be able to accept instructions directly from members of the public and professional clients.

In his spare time, Edward regularly represents clients on a pro-bono basis in areas of employment and housing law. He recently represented a claimant in a four-day final hearing in the employment tribunal in Manchester who brought claims of unfair dismissal, disability discrimination, and wrongful dismissal against their former employer. Edward currently works pro bono for the Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union as a legal representative, where he regularly accompanies cleaners at grievance and disciplinary hearings.

Background

Edward studied law at City, University of London, achieving a first-class honours, before obtaining a Master’s of Science from Exeter College, University of Oxford in African Studies (specialising in International Criminal Justice). He subsequently returned to the City Law School to complete an LLM in Bar Vocational Studies, funded by the Amelia Jackson Studentship and Postgraduate Scholarship awarded by Exeter College and City, University of London respectively.

Prior to pupillage, Edward spent three months working at the Capital Habeas Unit in the Federal Public Defenders Office in Dallas, TX. He supported US defence attorneys with post-conviction Federal appeals for clients who had been sentenced to death, and visited death row in Livingston, TX on a number of occasions. In the UK, Edward worked as a paralegal for a boutique criminal defence firm based in Birmingham, which specialises in all aspects of serious and violent crime. Edward spent five months working for the defence team of Rexhep Selimi in the Specialist Prosecutor v Thaci et al case at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers situated in The Hague. Mr Selimi has been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
