Roy Donnelly joins Chambers

News 3rd September 2024

We are pleased to announce that Roy Donnelly has joined Chambers as a probationary tenant. Roy specialises in health law including clinical negligence, health professional regulatory and disciplinary matters, inquests/inquiries, and general health law advice.

Roy has medical and business qualifications and practiced as a doctor and senior medical manager in Australia for many years before becoming a lawyer. He qualified as a solicitor in Australia in 2007 and was first admitted to the New South Wales Bar in 2017. He is a past practicing Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators and the Faculty of Clinical Forensic Medicine, Royal College of Pathologists Australasia.

Roy was a Deputy Chair of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee, one of Australia’s busiest and highest regarded hospital ethics committees. He had leadership roles in New South Wales pilot programs for both root cause analysis investigations into serious hospital adverse events, and the introduction of a clinical emergency response system for rapidly deteriorating patients. Roy has also worked as senior health manager in NSW custodial health services and was involved in deaths in custody investigations. Roy recently drafted updated chapters in negligence and professional liability, as well as mental health law for the Australian Medical Council book Good Medical Practice: Professionalism Ethics and Law (pending publication).

In his Australian practice Roy carried a large clinical negligence workload, and he appeared on behalf of the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission in disciplinary matters prosecuted against doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other registered health practitioners. Since moving to the UK in 2021, Roy has worked as an in-house consultant assisting in medical regulatory matters and inquests involving medical practitioners.

For further information on Roy’s practice, please don’t hesitate to contact James Wackett, Senior Civil Clerkj.wackett@pumpcourtchambers.com, or Tim Broom, Second Junior Civil Clerkt.broom@pumpcourtchambers.com or via 020 7353 0711.
