Justin Gau instructed to object to the removal of the Tobias Rustat Memorial from Jesus College, Cambridge

31 alumni of Jesus College, Cambridge have instructed Justin Gau to object to a petition for a Faculty for the removal of a memorial to Tobias Rustat from the college chapel. The memorial was created by Grinling Gibbons and is regarded as one of the most important pieces of funerary art in the country. Tobias Rustat was one of the most generous benefactors to the college.

The college wishes to remove it because of the alleged connection of Tobias Rustat with the slave trade.

The application has been made to the Consistory Court of the Diocese of Ely.
