Victoria Ellis’s practice encompasses all aspects of family law and the overlapping areas of Inheritance and the Court of Protection. She has extensive experience representing local authorities, parents and grandparents in all stages of non-contentious and contested hearings, at all court levels. Her particular interests include financial remedies cases and all private law children matters. She is routinely instructed in relation to claims under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996 and on claims for financial provision under schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989. Within private law children matters she is regularly instructed in cases involving vulnerable individuals.

Before joining chambers, Victoria worked as a Paralegal at Bates Wells & Braithwaite London LLP, providing support to both the Dispute Resolution and Public & Regulatory Departments. She assisted on matters ranging from advertising law, judicial review, regulatory and disciplinary law to contract, commercial and tortious matters. Victoria also has experience of charity law, procurement and EU Law.

Victoria is fast developing a reputation for combining an empathetic manner with assertive and pragmatic legal advice, this was recognised when she was shortlisted for Jordan’s Family Law – Young Barrister of the Year 2015.

Legal Services

Victoria has developed a strong financial practice; she accepts instructions in relation to all stages of proceedings, representing clients from first Direction Appointments through to Final Hearings covering the full range of applications including: cross petitions in divorce and arguments as to jurisdiction, finance for children under Schedule 1, claims by cohabitees and former cohabited under TOLATA 1996 and disputes between former cohabitants, whether domestic or with an international aspect.

Victoria also has experience in interim hearings, successfully obtaining maintenance pending suit, freezing injunctions and third party disclosure. Victoria has also experience in committal hearings.

Victoria has experience of private law children matters including those with elements of Domestic Violence or alcohol and substance misuse. She has represented parents in child arrangement order disputes at every stage of proceedings, including fact-finding hearings. She has successfully obtained and resisted Prohibited Steps Orders and Specific Issue Orders. Victoria has also undertaken matters concerning internal relocation.

Victoria has a keen interest in the area of Inheritance law, she is able to advise and provide representation in relation to the validity of wills, undue influence, knowledge and approval and fraud; construction of wills; administration of estates, rectification of wills and Intestacy. She has particular expertise in claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 and trust of land disputes.

Prior to joining the independent Bar Victoria gained experience within this area as a case worker at London based firm Bates Wells Braithwaite. During this period she gained a valuable insight into the day to day conduct of such matters. She is a regular speaker at our annual Inheritance Seminars.

Victoria is developing a busy common-law practice, she has particular interest in Family, Inheritance and Court of Protection work. Victoria has experience acting for local Authorities, parents and grandparents in all stages of non-contentious and contested hearings.
